Texas has identified five areas where a related series of courses are grouped by interest or skill set. These groupings provide students with in-depth knowledge of a subject area.

Typically, a student selects an endorsement in the ninth grade. The endorsement is earned by completing the curriculum requirements for graduation and the elective sequence for the particular endorsement (2 elective credits). These endorsements require four years of math and science and two elective credits (four elective courses) in the endorsement area.
